ALPS vs. FUJIX
The FUJIX Pictrography process uses a photosensitive donor paper exposed by laser diode scan. A dye image forms in the donor (as in photographic film) and this donor is then moistened and thermally transferred to the receiving paper in a single pass. Prints are rich in texture, with dense blacks and excellent long-term image stability. Colors are more saturated than available with 4-color or dye-sub process and there are no visible pixels or dithering.

The quality must be seen to be believed. If you want, you can get a sample.

The Alps MD-1300 is a dye-sublimation printer. It also produces continuous-tone prints, like the FUJIX. However, the Alps uses a moving print head to heat dye ribbons and transfer the image to the receiving paper. This leaves very subtle banding artifacts (see image at right), however, there are no visible pixels or dithering.

Alps prints are a terrific option for the budget-conscious collector.
